The Duke of Dark Desires The Wild Quartet Miranda Neville 9780062243348 Books

This story is definitely different....no simmering, virginal debutante hiding behind her fan. This is more true grit and determination by a woman determined to avenge the deaths of her immediate family a decade previous. I was very happy to see historic realism. The steamy romance is an almost instantaneous response by both parties as they play along. Highly recommend this well written novel.

The Duke of Dark Desires The Wild Quartet Miranda Neville 9780062243348 Books Reviews

As Regencies go, it's not bad. The writing is decent. The plot is pretty contrived and moves slowly. I did like the discussions about art. As others have said, the hero doesn't have many scruples and comes across as shallow, spending most of the book seducing the heroine. Initially the heroine seems strong and driven. Then she becomes stupid and gets more and more stupid as the story progresses. She lies about her life in St. Lucia yet doesn't bother to look up the details about the place she claims to be from before making pronouncements that are easily shown as false. She's come to the residence of the hero with the explicit purpose of finding the villain responsible for the death of her family. Yet for unfathomable reasons, she does not include the hero on her list of suspects even though there are plenty of hints. Why? Because she's attracted to the hero and so she prefers to be obtuse. During the reveal when she announces her real identity, the true villain refuses to acknowledge her even though they knew each other well. At this point, she should have clued in to the set up, instead she goes to the true villain and tries to enlist his help to discredit the hero. The story goes downhill precipitously. I dislike authors making heroines out to be dumb and dumber in order to drag out the plot to its inevitable conclusion. It isn't until very late in the book that the reveal happens. In my opinion, the story would have been a lot more interesting if the unveiling happens earlier and we see how the MCs deal with it, especially if the plot had unfolded in a more clever way.
Although inappropriately titled ("dark desires"?), this is far and away better than the third book of the series, (Lady Windermere's Lover (The Wild Quartet). That one has the least appealing "hero" Neville has ever created.

The hero of this is the "baddish" guy of the previous book, the recently titled Duke of Denton, Julian. Julian had been trying to seduce the estranged wife of Lord Windermere, not exactly a good thing, but I found myself liking him more than Lord Windermere and almost feeling Julian deserved the girl more than the guy who had her. Denton redeems himself in this book (to anyone who felt he needed redemption) and Miranda Neville redeems herself also, as I'd been considering demoting her to a lower level tier of HR writers.

This whole series centers around a group of upper-class individuals who are or were friends, has a running theme of paintings, whether collectors of or models for them. The art collection plot is central to this final installment and has its resolution at the end. Julian finally comes into full possession of this collection he had purchased years ago from a French nobleman, who was betrayed and was killed along with his family during the French Revolution.

What Julian also comes into possession of is his three half-sisters, left in his care by his mother, recently married for the third time and off to the Americas with husband #3. Naturally, with three young girls in the house, he needs a governess and, voila, here comes our heroine Jane as an applicant. She is accepted for the position, although mainly because Julian would really like to see her in his bed.

Julian's lusting and leering persona at the beginning of the story bothered me a little but the household soon settles into becoming a family, respectful of and caring for each other, and that includes our heroine-governess. She, of course, has secrets, to be uncovered slowly as the story progresses (not by readers, since we know her story from the beginning, but by other characters in the book). Jane, BTW, was a refreshingly different heroine from the average h to be found in HRs.

Mysteries involving Jane, the betrayal of the French art collector, and the art collection itself add another layer to what could have been just a slight governess-peer romance. And I was happy to see that the romance was romantic, improving after Julian's initial rather sleazy seduction turned into a rather lovely relationship.

So I guess Miranda Neville is still on my list of authors I'll take a chance on.
