Alliance A Linesman Novel S K Dunstall Books

The politics are heating up, even as Ean is becoming an indispensable weapon in his own right. Not only are there more than ten lines, there are more than eleven. And there’s more to Eleven, the alien ship, than they've uncovered so far. Kari Wang thinks her life is over. One captain; one ship. That’s the way it’s always been. But after she was badly injured, her legs lost, when her ship and crew were destroyed, someone has put a lot of time, money, and effort to piece her back together. But even if her body heals and she regains the use of her legs, can her spirit open itself to gaining a different ship and crew?

Both Kari Wang and Ean are the focus of multiple attacks and attempts to stop the Alliance in its quest to keep access to the lines and to the souls of the ships some of those lines inhabit. Their enemies would like the Alliance cut off from jump points and access to new lines.

Another great science fiction book from the authors. The world-building and characterizations are fantastic. The plots get twistier, the mysteries deeper, and the enjoyment just grows. Too much fun! I’m glad I’m reading these after the entire trilogy was written, so I didn’t have to wait for the next book.

Alliance A Linesman Novel S K Dunstall Books Reviews

I read all three of the Linesman books in less than a week. What drew me forward was the evolving story of the ship lines and the development of character relationships--a slow build toward understanding and trust that is completely different from so many stories where people bond into a team for no perceptible reason.
Political intrigue is a theme, as well as developing self-confidence and strength. The main character is a classic engineer/programmer/savant, completely immersed in his work, but is kind and caring when he interacts with others.
There are no sex scenes, but there are a couple of very slow burn romances I enjoyed. The violence is not graphic, though it has an impact.
Scenes and dialog are well-written. There are very, very few copyediting issues, (none that I noticed), and the writing is practically transparent. I love that. These books are all about story.
As others have commented, the female characters in this story are strong, whether they are good guys or bad guys. I was a little surprised to find a future with emperors and planets on which women are merely partners to men, but the narrative voice disapproved of those, so it didn't reduce my enjoyment.
This book is a good sequel to Linesman picking up the story right where the first book in the series ended. The New Alliance has control of the alien ships, Confluence and Eleven, and they have Ean the only known twelve linesman. But they don't know how the alien ships work or what weapon systems they have.

The alien ships also need a crew as well as a captain. Ean has been given the job of training linesman in his techniques so that they can crew and ultimately control the alien ships. In addition a reluctant captain has been selected for the Eleven, Selma Kari Wang, the sole survivor of a ship that was doing weapons testing.

In addition to all this there are unknown groups trying to capture Ean to learn what he knows about the alien ships.
I loved Linesman so much that I started reading Alliance immediately after I finished. It was a fantastic continuation on the story, where Ean continues to learn more about the alien ships and communicating with all the lines, and teaching other linesmen to do the same. A captain is finally chosen for the Eleven, Captain Selma Kari Wang, who lost her ship, her crew and her legs in an attack by ships using alien technology. She isn’t sure she wants another ship, since she should have died along with the rest of her crew, but Ean and the Eleven have a way of making her feel welcome and needed. After several attempts on her life and continuing danger from their enemies, she has a vested interest in the success of her mission. It was exciting to see Ean and the others as they learn more about using the lines to communicate and all the things Ean can do as a line 12. I liked most of the new characters introduced, particularly Tinatin and Mael, part of the Eleven’s new crew. The convoluted politics can get confusing at times, but all I need to know is that the New Alliance are the good guys and I’m good. I look forward to reading the next book, Confluence, which I’m going to start right away, since I’m hooked and need to know what happens next.
Think about everything that made the first Linesman book great. This book has none of that. By the points

-It felt like the author was trying to write an overcomplicated spy novel instead of a sci-fi book.
-First 65% of the book is just a slow build of an org chart with random attempts at assassination/kidnapping tossed in
-The "end" is more of a middle. It's not even a cliffhanger. There was no climax.
-So many characters introduced, and so many of them are poor/flat/annoying.
-The lines and the ships We really learn nothing more about either of them.
-The last 30% or so was decent writing, but it should have been the first 30% instead.
-There was so much story that could have been explored that this was truly a wasted opportunity (reviving the frozen aliens, learning where the ships came from, learning about the war the ships were engaged in, learning more about the lines, something actually happening with the eleven fleet, some development with Ean's character, building up a crew and bonding them over a first hard trial, the existence of other ships out there in human space, exploring new frontiers, spending time in the void to learn about it... the list is long and completely overlooked.

I would have given 2 stars, but at least the last 30% reached average quality and set the stage for a hopefully redeeming third installment where a few secrets are revealed and something happens besides drinking tea while debating temperature preference.
